Read Across
America Celebration
SBEA began the Read Across America celebration by
presenting members of the Spring Branch ISD Board of Trustees with Dr.
Seuss Travel mugs at the February 28th Board Meeting. Children in the
audience were invited to have their picture taken with the Cat afterwards.
Celebrity readers who will read to children in Cedar Brook and Frostwood
Elementary schools on March 2nd include SBISD Superintendent, Dr. Duncan
Klussmann and State Board of Education member Teri Leo, and and students
from the High School of Choice, led by JR Miller-Alper will read to Bear
Boulevard pre-schoolers. The Read Across America events were organized by
Malissa Downham, 5th grade teacher at Frostwood Elementary, SBEA Read
Across America Chair.

SBEA President,
Edie Clark, the Cat in the Hat ( aka Merrie Thomas) and friends made
a special Read Across America Presentation to the School Board.

SBEA Meet & Greet
During our first week of school, SBEA
members enjoyed a relaxing evening meet & greet at Guadalajara Mexican
Grille. A highlight of the event was getting to meet SBISD Board of
Trustees President, Wayne Schaper, and Trustees Susan Kellner, Theresa
Kosmoski, David Converse and Mike Fallick who dropped by to visit with
members. TSTA staff members Mary Acosta and Debby Summerlin joined us as
well. Forty seven people attended, and six new members joined SBEA!

Clark presents School Bell Award to Lynn Ashby
Congratulations to
columnist Lynn Ashby who was nominated by SBEA for his article published
in fall 2003 in the Greater Houston Weekly on why teachers want to leave
the classroom. Educators interviewed in the article includeTSTA staff
member Mary Acosta, retired SBEA member Gladys Wood, and SBEA
Vice-President Joyce Roberta Miller Alper. Mr. Ashby visited JR's
government classroom at the High School of Choice, and chatted with
