Beijing City Stay—9 days, 15 meals
The Great Wall of China, Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City await you in Beijing -- the capital of the People's Republic of China! In Tiananmen Square, be sure to catch a glimpse of the Tiananmen Tower -- constructed in 1417 during the Ming Dynasty. As you venture further, your eyes can't help but feast on the Forbidden City -- where fourteen emperors of the Ming Dynasty ruled their nation. At the Summer Palace, a former retreat for the royal family, take in exquisite views of the gardens and its surrounding lakes before enjoying a traditional dumpling dinner. A trip highlight is your walk along a portion of the only man-made structure visible from outer-space -- the Great Wall of China. Built in the fifth century, the structure spans more than 4,000 miles. Take in all that you can of the surrounding countryside before appeasing your appetite with a Peking duck dinner, followed by the Peking Opera show. Watch locals practice Tai Chi in front of the Temple of Heaven, where emperors past have come to thank the Gods for a good harvest. A trip to the Beijing Zoo allows you to see the famed panda bears, a 21st century icon of China. After you leave these cuddly creatures, enjoy a meal in the home of a local family as you learn their history and lifestyle. Although your trip has come to an end, you smile as the box-like architecture and power that Beijing emits resonates in your mind -- a memory sure to last you a lifetime. more
