Video: Rep. Eissler on Education

Rigor, relevance and relationships. “Those are the three R’s of dropouts,” Rob Eissler, chairman of the Texas House of Representatives, says. It’s the relevance part of the equation that he’s trying to change, and he hopes House Bill 3, a product of the 2009 Legislature, is a start.

“Kids should be more interested in what they’re taking so that they’ll stay in school,” he told TSTA at the end of August. “That’s the whole idea. They’ll see that, hey, maybe I can get a job with what I’m learning in school.”

Below are a few video clips from our interview. Read more of his thoughts on education and the legislature in the fall 2009 Advocate (www.tsta.org/news/current/advocate.shtml).

What were the major accomplishments of the 81st Legislature for Texas schools, Texas teachers, Texas students?

How do you respond to critics who say House Bill 3 still relies too much on standardized tests, that it still has too much test-and-punish?

Do you think the Legislature will tweak House Bill 3 in 2011?

What did the Legislature do to address the school dropout situation?

You said one challenge for the next session is finding the earliest indicators of a school’s imminent failure. Won’t it take time for those students to catch up and get back on the right track?

With teachers so busy, why should they get involved in politics or care about what’s going on at the Capitol?
