Regional Leadership Academies

Local officers and Association Representatives/Campus Leaders are invited to the 2021 Fall Regional Academy! This event will be held over Zoom on Saturday, November 13, 2021. There is no fee for this virtual event, but registration and a personal email address is required to receive Zoom access information.

9:45-10AM: Welcome and address by Ovidia Molina and Linda Estrada

10-11AM: Strengthening Your Local’s AR Structure
This session will examine strong and high capacity Association Representative (AR) structures as well as provide discussion to share guidance and tips to strengthen your local’s AR structure and increase your local’s capacity to unionize. Presented by Sandra Salazar and Alonzo Mendoza

11AM-Noon: Developing Leaders & Engaging Members in Collective Action
Participants will analyze work distribution and identify core, activist, supporter, and disengaged members in their local Associations. This training will also cover how to identify organizing campaign issues that engage members and community through collective action as well as discussing how to organize for change through political power. Presented by Micaela Albujar-Leon and Alonzo Mendoza

Noon-1PM: Communications
This training will present some basic dos and don’ts of dealing with the news media and how to make your local a go-to source for comments when a reporter wants an educator’s perspective for a story. Presented by Clay Robison

1-2PM: Classroom 101: Know Your Rights!
In this session, we will review employment laws and school board policies that relate to public school employment in Texas. We will discuss employment issues related to contracts, leave, grievances, job duties and overall working conditions. Presented by Amanda Moore
